While his birthplace is disputed between Argentina, Uruguay and France one thing is certain, Carlos Gardel was living in Bueno Aires, Argentina at the age of two. And although he might have not been born in Argentina, his image is plastered all over the streets of Buenos Aires and today, he is known as the famous Argentinian who introduced tango to the world.
Gardel started out singing in local bars, restaurant, and markets in Abaso when he was younger, so he is also looked upon as an “immigrant who triumphed;” he started off as a boy from the middle class, living with his single mother, to a celebrity whose house is now a museum.
Before Gardel's interpretation, almost all tangos were purely instrumental. With his classic tango story known as “Mi Noche Triste” or “My Sad Night,” Gardel revolutionized tango and added lyrics to it. This song was very melodramatic and nostalgic, however it perfectly captured a piece of Bueno Aires. It was in the 1930s that Gardel introduced tango to the rest of the world. He went touring through South America with some of Argentina's best guitarists. After that, Gardel even started in Spanish-language movies and his fame grew even more.
