Gustavo Santaolalla

Gustavo Santaolalla (1951 - Present)

Biography:

He was born in 1952 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Santaolalla has been recognized as a gifted musician, songwriter, producer, and composer. He won many Grammy and Oscar awards, and also earned a lot of respect for his artistic accomplishments. Santaolalla began taking guitar lessons at the age of 5, and continued for years without ever learning how to read or write music. Then as a teenager, he formed Arco Iris in 1967 and became the band’s singer, songwriter and guitarist. The band released several albums in the 70’s and was very popular. Santaolalla eventually became tired of his life in Argentina, and because of political reasons, had the chance to flee to Los Angeles in 1978.

In Los Angeles, Santaolalla formed another band called Wet Picnic, and the band eventually released many records with Unicorn Records. He encountered an Argentine folk legend, Leon Gieco, with whom he released many more albums. After that, they traveled together to many cities in Argentina and worked with many musicians.

After that, Santaolalla began focusing on his work alone and thus produced many bands and albums along the way; and this is when Hollywood's door began opening for Santaolalla.  He fielded a series of soundtrack opportunities including the soundtrack, Golden Globe and Oscar wins for Brokeback Mountain in 2005. He then produced a score for Babel in 2006 and then in 2010 he produced the score for the film Biutiful. His latest work is the score for the highly acclaimed, cutting-edge survival horror video game, The Last of Us in 2013.
