Biography:
She was born in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, and her parents were French and Quechuan. Her birth name is Haydee Mercedes Sosa and she started singing from an early age; winning the first prize at a contest that was sponsored by a local radio station which was a 2 month contract, at the age of 15. In the early 1960’s she met her first husband Manuel Oscar Matus and he introduced her to the nueva cancion movement with which she produced many albums.
In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, the US-supported right-wing counteroffensive took place in Latin America and many musicians were made to suffer the consequences. Sosa was one of those as she suffered harassment and censorship; but her international fame prevented her from being treated too brutally. She was eventually arrested and was released by international pressure; then fearing for her life she fled to Europe and tried to start a new life. During these years Sosa performed many times but later her ill health prevented her from performing any longer. She then began to collaborate with artist like Shakira, Holly Near, and Luciano Pavarotti. During her healthy lifetime she produced over 70 albums but was hospitalized for liver problems. She eventually died of kidney failure and cardiac arrest.
