About Argentina: The Cosquín Folk Festival

The Cosquín Folk Festival
The Cosquín Folk Festival is by far the most important folk music festival of Argentina. The duration of the festival is about 9 days and that’s why it is also referred to as “nine moons of Cosquín”.
The first festival was led by Dr. Reinaldo Wisner and Dr. Alejandro Guinder between 21 and 29 January of 1961. The festival’s goal was to attract tourists so as the result a lot of artists were involved in the festival and essentially it became one of the largest and most important folk events in country.  The Cosquín festival was not only a competition for artists but rather they would freely sing all night outside of the official event.
The Nine Cosquín Moons broadcasts live ever since the festival in 1962 and it has attracted millions of listeners. In 1867, Atahualpa Yupanqui, a very famous guitarist won the first prize in the festival. Not too long after, the public television started showing the first two hours of each night in order to popularize the event among the viewers. The Cosquín festival has increased the success of most artists in folk music of Argentina (i.e. Los Fronterzos, Maria Ofelia, Soledad Pastorutti).
