Martha Argerich, a pianist, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on June 5th 1941. By the age of five, Argerich was enrolled in piano study by her mother who was a piano teacher. Argerich's teacher stressed to her the importance of lyrics and feeling. When she was just eight, Argerich played in a Mozart concert. She was very determined and did not miss any notes. In 1955, her family decided to move to Europe and she started to study in Switzerland. In 1957, at the young age of 16, Argerich won the Geneva International Competition and just three weeks later, she won the Ferruccio Busoni International Competition. In 1965, she became the first person from the Western Hemisphere to win first prize at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw.
Martha Argerich has received high rating for her performances. Today, she gets invitations to perform with the most prestigious orchestras in music festivals all over the world. She has also recorded for companies such as Sony, Philips and Teledec and her performances have been broadcasted on television all over the world. Since 1998, Argerich has been the Artistic Director of the Beppu Festival in Japan; she has also created many worldwide piano competitions.
